The clients came to us with a clear sense of what they wanted their home to feel like — warm, layered, and quietly sophisticated. Following a full refurbishment of their Highgate property, they were looking for a lighting scheme that would do justice to the considered interiors they had created, without overpowering them.

Their taste told a clear story: natural materials, organic textures, light tones. Stone table lamps. Soft cream upholstery. Pale timber. A Moroccan-inspired pendant they had long wanted to place properly. Our role was to build a lighting design around those reference points — to let those elements breathe, and to bring warmth, depth, and intimacy to the places that matter most.

Working room by room, we developed a layered scheme that balances recessed spotlights for everyday function with carefully placed accent and decorative lighting to create atmosphere. The result is a home that feels effortlessly warm at every hour of the day.

Moroccan-inspired statement pendant light

A Statement Pendant Inspired by Eastern Craftsmanship

The clients had found the perfect pendant — a hand-crafted piece with Moroccan and Turkish influences, characterised by its intricate metalwork and the quality of light it casts when illuminated. Finding the right setting for it had always been the challenge.

We positioned it in the open-plan stairwell and hallway — a space with the height to carry it properly and the visibility to make it a genuine focal point of the home. A bespoke ceiling rose and carefully specified warm white source ensure the light quality is exactly right: soft enough to feel intimate, but present enough to show the pendant's detailing at its best.

Framed by the clean architectural lines of the refurbished staircase and complemented by wall lighting on either side, the pendant introduces a sense of craftsmanship and cultural character that anchors the entire interior scheme. It is the moment you understand what this home is about.

Layered Lighting for a Warm, Organic Interior

Creating warmth through lighting is not a single decision — it is the result of many small, considered choices working together. At Highgate, we designed each space to carry at least three distinct layers of light: ambient, accent, and decorative.

Recessed spotlights throughout the home are fitted with warm white, high-CRI lamps and dimmed to sit comfortably rather than brightly. This provides the functional base — the light you live in day to day. The layers above and around it are what bring the space to life. Wall lighting at lower levels adds warmth at eye height and draws attention to the natural texture of the walls. Stone table lamps on side tables reinforce the organic palette the clients had worked hard to establish, providing intimate pools of light for reading and relaxing.

In the bedroom, a smaller statement chandelier echoes the pendant downstairs — adding a quiet touch of considered elegance without disrupting the calm, neutral atmosphere. Every fitting, from the most decorative to the most discreet, was chosen to serve a single purpose: a home that always feels good to be in.

"

We always knew what we wanted the house to feel like — we just hadn't found anyone who could translate that into a lighting plan. Lightplan understood our taste from the very first conversation. The finished result is exactly how we imagined it, perhaps even better.

Frequently Asked Questions

We start by understanding how you live in the space and what you want each room to feel like at different times of day. From there, we work with your existing palette, materials, and key pieces to build a lighting design that enhances what's already there rather than competing with it.

Layered lighting combines ambient, accent, and decorative light sources to create depth and atmosphere in a room. Rather than relying on a single overhead source, layering gives you genuine control over mood — bright and functional when you need it, warm and intimate when you don't. It's the difference between a room that looks lit and a room that feels alive.

Absolutely. We regularly work with clients who have found a piece they love and need a scheme built around it. We'll advise on the right position, hanging height, ceiling rose specification, and bulb type to ensure it performs as beautifully as it looks — and sits in harmony with everything else in the room.

For a warm, cosy residential atmosphere, we typically specify warm white LED sources between 2700K and 3000K with a high CRI (colour rendering index) of 90 or above. This produces the soft, flattering light that makes natural materials — stone, timber, linen — look their very best.

In most cases, yes. The extent of work depends on your ceiling construction and existing wiring, but our team assesses this carefully during an initial survey. We always aim to minimise disruption where possible but a site visit will determine the best options for your space.

We offer a complete end-to-end service: lighting design, sourcing and supply of all fittings, and professional installation by our trusted electricians. Our goal is to make the process as straightforward and collaborative as possible from start to finish.
