Commercial Lighting Design

Lux compliance, energy performance, and atmosphere — designed together from the very start of your project.

Commercial lighting is a distinct discipline — not an upscaled version of residential work.

Every commercial project carries considerations that residential work does not: lux level standards, emergency lighting provisions, energy performance targets, and in some cases BREEAM certification. Getting the balance between function, atmosphere, and regulatory compliance right — and translating that into a specification that can actually be built from — is what Lightplan does.

The spaces we design for

Every commercial environment has its own lighting brief.

Office lighting design — Lightplan
Office Spaces

Task, Ambience & Wellbeing

Effective office lighting serves employees first — reducing eyestrain, integrating natural light where possible, and creating an atmosphere that supports both focused work and collaborative interaction. A well-designed office lighting scheme measurably improves productivity and staff wellbeing.

Retail and leisure lighting design — Lightplan
Retail Spaces

Product, Brand & Experience

Retail lighting directs attention, reinforces brand identity, and influences purchasing decisions. Intensity and colour temperature can define zones, highlight promotions, and create an atmosphere that resonates with the target audience — whether that calls for warmth and exclusivity or energy and immediacy.

Industrial lighting design — Lightplan
Industrial Spaces

Safety, Visibility & Durability

Industrial environments demand high-performance lighting that enables safe working, withstands demanding conditions, and operates efficiently over the long term. We specify fixtures built for the environment they’re placed in — accounting for dust, moisture, temperature variation, and continuous use where required.

Hospitality lighting design — Lightplan
Hospitality Spaces

Atmosphere, Journey & Memory

Lighting shapes a guest’s experience from the moment they enter. Warm downlighting, architectural highlights, and carefully considered transitions between spaces create an atmosphere that feels consistent and considered — while ensuring staff have the task lighting they need to operate without disruption.

How we work

A clear process from initial brief to completed installation.

01 Initial Consultation We begin by understanding your project objectives, the nature of the space, and what the lighting needs to achieve — functionally, aesthetically, and in terms of compliance. This conversation shapes everything that follows.
02 Site Survey A thorough site visit allows us to take accurate measurements, understand the architectural constraints and opportunities, assess available natural light, and identify any existing infrastructure that will inform the design.
03 Scheme Design We produce detailed lighting layouts using CAD, modelling lux levels across every zone to ensure performance targets are met. The design is reviewed against compliance requirements before it moves to specification.
04 Specification & Proposal We deliver a comprehensive specification document — fixture schedules, circuit plans, control strategy — alongside a full cost proposal. Everything needed to move the project forward with confidence and without surprises.
05 Procurement Lightplan handles procurement directly through our trusted supplier network. We source fixtures specified for your project — ensuring quality, lead times, and compliance with the design intent are all managed before installation begins.
06 Installation Oversight We oversee the installation process to ensure it is executed in accordance with the specification. Issues identified on site are resolved against the design intent, not improvised — so the finished result matches what was planned.
What shapes a commercial scheme

Three considerations every commercial project must get right.

Commercial lighting is subject to obligations that residential work is not. A specification that does not address all three of these areas from the outset will require costly revision — or fail to meet the obligations of the finished build.

Atmosphere & Colour Temperature

Brightness levels, colour temperature, and control all determine how a commercial space feels and performs. Warmer temperatures create comfort and relaxation — suited to hospitality. Cooler temperatures support focus — suited to task-heavy office environments. The appropriate lux level for the space and its intended use is the starting point for every scheme we design.

Fixture Selection & Longevity

Commercial lighting specifications are only as good as the fittings used to deliver them. Downtime caused by maintenance or premature replacement disrupts operations. We specify durable, energy-efficient fixtures appropriate to each environment — prioritising long service life and reduced running costs, so your scheme continues to perform without interruption.

Regulatory Compliance

Commercial spaces are subject to a range of lighting-specific regulations: Part L of the Building Regulations, Part M accessibility requirements, and BS 5266 emergency lighting standards. A scheme that does not meet these obligations is not fit for purpose. We ensure every specification is compliant before it reaches site.
