Every room in a home asks something different of its lighting. A kitchen needs bright, shadow-free light to cook by, a bedroom needs warm, low light to wind down, and a hallway needs to be safe at night and welcoming by day.
Our lighting designers plan rooms like these every week. These guides share how we approach each one, with the measurements, colour temperatures and details that make the difference, and links to the projects where we have put them into practice.
Choose a room below to read its guide. When you are ready, our lighting design service can turn it into a plan for your home.
Room by roomguides
Practical lighting ideas and design advice, room by room.
Start with how the room is used, then plan three layers: ambient light for the whole room, task light where you work or read, and accent light for character. Put each layer on its own circuit or dimmer, and agree the plan before first fix so cables go where they are needed.
Ambient light fills the room, usually from downlights, a ceiling light or hidden LED. Task light is brighter and focused, over worktops, mirrors or a reading chair. Accent light adds character, picking out artwork, shelves, architecture or a statement pendant.
Warm white around 2700K suits living rooms and bedrooms, with 2200K to 2700K for bedside light. Kitchens and bathrooms work well at 2700K to 3000K, with slightly cooler light at a bathroom mirror. Keep the same colour temperature within a room so the light looks consistent.
As a guide, a living room needs around 100 to 150 lumens per square metre, and a kitchen around 150 to 200, with brighter task light on the worktops. Our kitchen and living room guides include calculators that give a starting point for your room size.
As early as possible, ideally before first fix. Once walls are plastered and ceilings boarded, moving cables, switches and drivers costs far more. A lighting plan agreed early means every fitting has a power supply in the right place.
Not for every room, but a lighting designer makes a real difference to kitchens, open-plan spaces, stairwells and any room with high ceilings, glass roofs or architectural features. Our designers create a plan for a single room or a whole house, ready for your electrician.
Yes. We create whole-house lighting plans with every fitting, circuit and switch marked, so the lighting feels consistent from room to room. We can also add lighting control so scenes can be set at a single press.
Our showrooms have lighting switched on and set up in room settings, so you can see the light as well as the fitting. Our team can talk through your plans and help you choose.

Send us your drawings or bring them to a showroom. Our designers will create a lighting plan for one room or the whole house, ready for your electrician, and help you choose the lights to go with it.
