The client came to Lightplan with a very specific fitting in mind — a traditional crystal chandelier with an antique, discreetly gothic frame that felt both period and genuinely luxurious. The difficulty was that no off-the-shelf version existed in the right proportions for their coach house living space. What they needed was that exact light, made to order.

We worked directly with the manufacturer to develop a bespoke version to the precise dimensions the room required. The design features two rows of crystal beads draped across the frame — each catching and refracting the warm glow of the LED candle filament bulbs — installed as the centrepiece of the newly renovated space on a decorated ceiling rose. The chandelier is the defining piece in the room, and everything about the installation was designed to give it that status.

Designed to Order — Crystal and Candlelight

When a client arrives with a clear vision for a specific fitting, our role is to make it achievable. In this case, that meant developing a bespoke chandelier from the ground up — translating a design the client loved into a specification that was precisely right for the room it was destined for.

The chandelier frame takes its character from traditional antique styling — angular, gothic-influenced, and unmistakably decorative — but executed with a quality and restraint that reads as considered rather than fussy. Two rows of crystal beads are draped across the frame, positioned to catch and multiply the warm glow of the LED candle filament bulbs and throw soft, shifting light into the room.

The CAD drawing shown here was produced during the design phase and presented to the client for their approval before manufacturing began. It confirms the agreed dimensions, the frame configuration, and the crystal arrangement — ensuring the finished piece would sit in exactly the right proportion within the coach house living space. This step is standard in how we work: nothing enters production until the client has signed off every detail.

The Centrepiece of a Coach House Renovation

The chandelier was installed as the defining piece in the main living space of the newly renovated coach house, fixed to a decorated ceiling rose that gives the fitting the traditional setting it deserves. Alongside the chandelier, we also designed and installed the wider lighting scheme for the coach house — but this is the light that sets the character of the room.

Hung at the right height for the space, the crystal beads sit at a level where they can be properly appreciated — the warm glow of the LED candle filaments travelling through each facet and casting a subtle, constantly shifting light across the ceiling and walls. Bright enough to be genuinely functional, but never anything other than atmospheric.

The antique gothic frame gives the chandelier a personality that sits naturally in a period-influenced interior, while the quality of the crystal and the precision of the bespoke sizing ensure it reads as exactly what it is: a fitting that was made for this room, and no other.

We knew exactly what we wanted — we'd seen this chandelier and fallen completely in love with it. The problem was getting it to fit properly in the room. Lightplan understood that straight away, worked with the manufacturer to get the sizing exactly right, and the result is even better than we imagined.

Your Questions Answered

Absolutely. Many clients come to us with a specific fitting in mind — one they've seen in a showroom, a hotel, or online — but need it in a size that actually works for their space. We work directly with manufacturers to develop a bespoke specification based on the chosen design, agreeing every dimension and finish before production begins.

We begin with a site visit to take precise measurements and understand the ceiling height, room proportions, and structural conditions. We then work with the manufacturer to translate your preferred design into exact dimensions — frame size, drop, crystal arrangement, and finish — producing technical drawings for your approval before anything enters production. Nothing is ordered until you've confirmed every detail.

For crystal chandeliers, we typically specify LED candle filament bulbs — warm white at 2700K, with a high CRI of 90 or above. The visible filament gives a traditional candlelight character that suits decorative frames beautifully, while the LED efficiency means the fitting can run for extended periods without generating excessive heat or energy cost.

A ceiling rose is both a structural and decorative element — it provides the fixing point for the chandelier and frames the junction between the fitting and the ceiling. For a statement chandelier, a well-proportioned ceiling rose completes the installation visually, giving the fitting a proper period setting rather than a bare electrical connection. We specify and install the rose as part of the full lighting installation.

Yes, and in most cases it should. A chandelier works best as the centrepiece of a layered scheme rather than the sole light source in a room. We design the supporting lighting — recessed spots, wall lights, or accent sources — to complement the chandelier rather than compete with it, so the room reads well at every level of brightness and every time of day.

Always. A site visit is the foundation of every project we take on. It allows us to take accurate measurements, assess the ceiling structure and electrical conditions, and have an honest conversation about what is achievable and how. We never specify or quote from photographs alone — the space needs to be seen in person before we can give you a meaningful answer.
