Regulation Compliance

REGULATION COMPLIANCE

The electrical industry is tightly regulated, and lighting is no exception.

Whether you’re working on a commercial, residential or industry project, there are a number of regulations that need to be considered and met if you are to avoid not just financial penalties, but potentially high energy costs and safety hazards.

While making sense of the legal jargon, fine print and interactions between these regulations can be challenging, Lightplan’s regulatory compliance services can help.

WHAT REGULATIONS DO YOU NEED TO BE AWARE OF?

Building Regulations Part B

Primarily concerned with fire safety at large, Part B also includes specific provisions relating to lighting. These include:

  • The installation of emergency lighting in certain buildings to ensure safe evacuation in the event of a fire or power failure, along with minimum illumination levels and effective signage.
  • The installation of fire-rated downlights, able to maintain the integrity of the ceiling 30, 60 or 90 minutes without the need for fire hoods.

Building Regulations Part C

In the broader context of managing contaminants and moisture in buildings, Part C specifically mandates that downlights be equipped with moisture seals to prevent condensation from seeping through the fixture.

Building Regulations Part E

Part E focuses on the acoustics within a building, but specifies that lighting fixtures must be integrated into the design without compromising sound insulation.

Building Regulations Part L1

Part L1 specifically targets fuel conservation in domestic dwellings, stipulating that at least 75% of all light fittings in main living areas have an efficacy of over 45 lumens per circuit and a total light output exceeding 400 lumens. This regulation promotes the adoption of lighting controls such as dimmers and timers, to minimise reliance on artificial lighting and enhance energy efficiency.

Building Regulations Part L2

Part L2 focuses on the conservation of fuel in non-domestic and commercial buildings, and sets out a minimum requirement of 60 lumens per circuit watt for all general lighting in office and industrial environments.

EN 1838

EN 1838 aims to provide sufficient illumination for safe evacuation and orientation in the event of an emergency. This includes ensuring that escape routes, exits, and safety equipment are adequately lit. The standard specifies minimum illumination levels for different areas, including escape routes, open areas, and locations with specific risks.

BS EN 12464

BS EN 12464 emphasises the importance of effective lighting design to enhance visual comfort, improve work performance, and reduce the risk of accidents. It acknowledges the need for good lighting to support various tasks performed in indoor environments.
